Residency for non-EU citizens: visas and arraigo
For citizens of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Latin America and other non-EU countries, there are several routes. The immigration regulation in force since May 2025 changed several of them.
From your home country: visas
- Non-lucrative residence visa: to live in Spain without working there. You need financial means (in 2025, about €2,400 a month for the main applicant, i.e. 400% of the IPREM, plus an amount for each family member) and private health insurance with no co-payments.
- Digital nomad visa: to work remotely for companies based outside Spain.
- Work, study or job-seeking visas, depending on your profile.
- The “golden visa” through buying property no longer exists since April 2025.
From within Spain: arraigo
For someone already in Spain, arraigo allows them to regularise their situation in certain cases:
- Social arraigo: two years in Spain are now required (instead of three before), with other conditions.
- Socio-labour arraigo, with an employment contract.
- Socio-training arraigo, while following a training course.
- Family arraigo, for example for the parent of a Spanish child.
- Second-chance arraigo, for people who had a permit and lost it.
Spouse or partner of an EU citizen
If you are married to or in a registered partnership with an EU citizen (an Irish or Spanish citizen, for example), there is a specific residency route. See the guide on marriage and pareja de hecho.
Our advice
Every case has its own details (criminal record, exact time in Spain, continuous padrón registration…). A mistake can cost months, so it is best to have a professional check your file before you submit it.
